It would be interesting to have a little more clarity on real-money rewards. Would be nice to know though what the total payout pool is, what that's a function of, and how it is divided. FAQ is awfully vague on the subject.

In my case, it does seem a little surprising to make $0.80 in August for 4.28% return and then only 40% more ($1.13) in September for 22.32% return. 3.02% in July paid $0.34. I do not see a clear relationship here except that payout increases for each consecutive month of outperforming the S&P.

Since it's free money for a model portfolio, I can't complain, but it's not clear what the point of giving out money at all is if there's no clear incentive and the amounts are negligible. I would rather there were just additional rewards in contests instead of a meaningless monthly prize.

It's true; the compensation procedure is not clear enough right now. In the midst of these hectic days for the markets and, as you have seen, for our data providers, we have been formulating a much more transparent scheme. As we currently stand, our #1 criteria for making the most money is the track record you build on UpDown. That is, your rewards are greatest when you have proven that you can outperform the market by a significant margin month after month. We chose this approach because we felt that consistent exceptional performance over a long period of time is the true mark of a great investor. However, the fact that your track record counts for more than the exact percentage by which you beat the market during your initial months is confusing and frustrating to many members like you. Also, we have felt that we should not expose the exact formula that we use for compensation calculation because it is extremely long and complex, which we thought would only cause additional confusion, and because we did not want to reveal it to our competitors. It is now increasingly clear to us that every UpDown member needs to be able to see the full formula and easily understand how much money he or she will earn each month based on his or her performance. In hindsight, we should have done a better job with this in the first place but hey, we are living and learning just like you are, right?

I got screwed out of a pretty penny too from all the errors not allowing me to trade. Plus the WB thing. But honestly if I get one more "exception error" which prevents me from doing anything.... well i prolly wont do anything accept deal with it and take the losses :(
