I have been buying and selling stocks since I was 11 years old, ... with my own money. I look for trends in the real world. (Newly popular clothing brands everyone seems to be wearing, particular fast food chains with extremely long but fast moving lines, more people starting to ride motorcycles instead of cars because of gas prices, etc.) Then I find the companies whose earnings will benefit from those trends 3 months from now and buy their stocks today, preferably on full margin right before their earnings releases. (Volcom) When I see a trend that I think is a fad or is stupid, I wait for the fad to start to wane, next look for a technical signal of a peak. Then I short the stock. (Crox, Hot Topic) Solid, growing, past earnings should back up your real world analysis though. If the both check out then buy the stock. Trend noticed + PEG less than 1 = Buy.
